Finally, it seems, studios are starting to realize what it takes to make a great DVD package. Today's New Line DVD release of Pleasantville (also available on VHS) makes the most of the movie's engaging storyline and spiffy colorized effects and throws in a heap of extras to make it a flick well worth owning in digital format. Goodies on the widescreen disc include commentary by director Gary Ross, the musical score by Oscar-nominated composer Randy Newman, a featurette on "The Art of Pleasantville," a video of Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe," a storyboard gallery, the trailer and DVD-ROM original screenplay. But don't let all the bells and whistles drown out the movie, a spirited flick starring red-hot Reese Witherspoon (Cruel Intentions), Tobey Maguire, William H. Macy, Joan Allen and Jeff Daniels. Pleasantville is the pleasant story of what happens to a couple of kids who fall into their TV and can't get out. Beware: The same might happen to you with this fully loaded DVD.
